The world is changing rapidly, so our democratic systems need to evolve to stay relevant. Democratic renewal is about reimagining how power is shared, how voices are heard, and how decisions are made. Ultimately, it’s about ensuring power stays with the people so that, together, we can achieve an equitable future for everybody.
DEM2036 is an incorporated body investigating ways to promote and revitalise the practice of democracy in South Australia. Our aim over the next decade is to collaborate widely with South Australians on ideas about how our democracy can become more inclusive, responsive, and better placed to meet the challenges ahead.
To help with this task, DEM2036 has developed a draft Charter for Democratic Renewal to kick-start community discussion. The Charter sets out what we believe are the key principles that should underpin the promotion and strengthening of South Australian democracy, and outlines a series of ideas – possible actions – that could improve the practice of democracy in South Australia.
There are, of course, groups who are already working on ideas similar to those contained in this Charter. Our intention is to collaborate with them to advance the agenda in each topic area, to build broad support across the community, and to link across groups to establish a broad framework for democratic renewal in South Australia.
Our ambition is that, over the next ten years, the ideas and innovations generated through the process will effect changes to current structures and processes, as well as being represented in a new State Constitution that provides for ongoing democratic oversight and renewal.
