Alan Reid is Professor Emeritus of Education at the University of South Australia where he has held a number of positions including Dean of Education, Director of Research Centres, and Professor of Education. Alan’s research and writing in education focuses on curriculum, education policy, and education and democracy; and he has been a passionate advocate for public education over many years through speaking and writing. His most recent book Changing Australian Education: How policy is taking us backwards and what can be done about it was published by Allen and Unwin and argues for new directions in Australian education.
In 2023, Professor Reid was appointed to the Board of the History Trust of South Australia, and to the Education Innovation Council of the South Australian Department for Education. His contributions to education have been recognised through a number of awards at state and national levels, including the Gold Medal of the Australian Council of Educational Leaders (ACEL); becoming a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2012; and being named as one of four finalists for South Australian of the Year in 2017.
